Drug & Alcohol Testing

Your employees may perform roles that are safety critical. They should not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at work. Drugs and alcohol can account for lost working days, fatal accidents and low performance.

If you are aware of drink or drug misuse in your organisation then you have a responsibility to take action in order to protect your other employees or third parties from any risk.

Employees working in the following, are advised to undergo Drug & Alcohol Screening:

  • Construction and Demolition workers, particularly if undertaking safety critical roles such as working at height or operating plant equipment
  • Those in manufacturing working with machinery
  • Company car drivers or those driving HGV’s

However, one off tests are also available for any Occupation.

A Urine test is used to test for drug use. We test for:

  • Amphetamines (AMP500)
  • Benzodiazepines (BZO)
  • Barbiturates (BAR)
  • Cannabis (THC)
  • Cocaine (COC)
  • Methadone (MTD)
  • Opiates (OP)
  • Methamphetamine (MET)
  • Propoxyphene (PPX)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Methaqualone (MQL)

Where there is a positive drug result, confirmatory testing is essential. For example some prescription medicines could trigger a false positive result.  The confirmatory test can identify if cannabis levels are due to direct smoking or passive smoking at a party. This test can be used in court if the employee appeals against any disciplinary measures.
